Porcupine Stadium And Athletic Complex Wins Design Award

SPRINGTOWN (August 24, 2010)--Each year, the Texas Association of School Administrators, Texas Association of School Boards, and Texas Society of Architects proudly award excellence in new education facility construction and renovation projects in Texas. The associations present awards of excellence in the categories of design, innovation, value, process of planning, sustainability, and educational appropriateness. Awards are determined by a six-member panel of judges, comprised of two members from each association.

Claycomb Associates, Architects entered the newly completed Porcupine Stadium and Athletic Complex into this year’s competition for Springtown ISD. When the much-anticipated results of the competition came in, Claycomb Associates contacted Superintendent Andrea Hungerford to inform her that Porcupine Stadium and Athletic Complex had received an award of excellence in Design.

With 100, overall, Texas school projects entered into the competition this year, Kevin Smith, Executive Vice President of Claycomb Associates, was pleased to see this project honored, “It’s not often that a project such as a stadium wins an award in this competition.”

When asked what he thought made this project stand out, Kevin had this to say, “The site function and flow makes this project stand out. The plaza area is a unique feature, which allows attendees to eat and gather while still watching the game; it also provides excellent visibility and security. The entire complex works together as a cohesive unit with shared dressing rooms, concessions and restrooms facilities for all three venues.”

Kevin also added, “Porcupine Stadium is more than a football field; it is a place where the community can gather. Working with Superintendent Hungerford and the entire district in designing the stadium and the entire sports complex has been a pleasure. This project has united and strengthened the Springtown community in support of their students.”

Bobby Phillips of Gallagher Construction Services as the Construction Manager for the district had this to say, “If I could earn my living just building for Springtown ISD, I would be happy. There is not a better group of people to work for. They all have the same common goal and made it easy to bring this project together.”

Equally honored by the award was Francis Zordilla, Project Manager at Claycomb Associates, who added, “The community and district were very involved with the project from the beginning concept to the first kickoff. This strong support helped push the project through to completion.”
