The architects led a team of faculty and board members to determine current and future needs of the district. Extensive demographics showed the new school would need to accommodate phased additions to serve current and future enrollments based on a rapidly expanding student population expected in the district. The district also wanted to place an emphasis on community and pride in their high school. The resulting core facility is designed for phased construction to meet the needs of an expanding student body. The school was designed to exceed strict energy code requirements and the materials selected meet a “50 year” durability criteria. The design also accommodates multiple teaching methods.

All spaces are set up for wireless access. The media center is set up for a variety of tasks including individual study, group work, and personal reading. Classrooms are grouped based on discipline to allow team teaching and collaborative learning. Clerestory windows in common areas enhance educational experience while providing healthy natural light.

Early Planning:
High school planned for one of the fastest growing districts in TX. Enrollment projections show continued growth at all levels. Architects led team of faculty & board members to determine current & future needs of district. Extensive demographics showed new school would require phased additions to serve current & future enrollments. District wanted to maintain sense of community and pride in their high school. Resulting core facility designed for phased construction for increasing enrollment. Commons areas are bathed in natural light & require less artificial lighting. School was designed to exceed strict energy code requirements.  An energy management system monitors and controls energy use. Dedicated outside air units reduce CO2 levels. Materials were selected to meet a “50 year” durability criteria. Metal stud partitions in classroom areas allow for future design flexibility. The gym/stage, dining, music, & the media center can be used separately without interrupting academics.

Design:
Architects spent time in community & at site accounting for several factors. Entire final site was considered in design; planned so that final campus would function as needed.  Project was then broken down into phases to meet needs of district as they came. First phase of project consisted of core facilities for 1,500 w/ initial capacity of 1,200 for current enrollment. School was designed with curved corridor connecting all spaces; to be extended for final phases to include additional spaces.

Educational Appropriateness:
Building designed to accommodate community & after hours use by separately secured sections. Science labs designed to house necessary tools for exceptional learning experience. Layout includes state-of-the-art lab equipment & shared prep rooms for prep & storage. Media center is set up for a variety of tasks including individual study, group work, and personal reading. Classrooms grouped based on discipline to allow team teaching & collaborative learning. This includes shared computer labs.

Innovation:
Design accommodates multiple teaching methods. Clerestory windows in common areas enhance educational experience while providing healthy natural light. All spaces are set up for wireless access. Support spaces, gym, dining, music, & media center can be used without interrupting academics & function separately from rest of school for after hours use. District decided to equip their schools with security system that could alert admins & keep them informed of campus security situation at all times.
