Miss May Vernon Elementary School

Royse City ISD

The strong relationship and history between Royse City ISD, the architect, and the contractor led to a highly collaborative project that contained costs for the District.  Working from the original prototype, the design was refined to meet the most current educational needs.  The contractor was also able to refine his process, decreasing construction time and costs.

The school was dedicated to “Miss” May Vernon, an educator who taught in Fate, Texas for 50 years.   During that time her students learned about reading, writing, math, penmanship, and art.  A picture of George Washington, which hung in her classroom, was given to the school by her family and is still on display at Miss May Vernon Elementary.

In addition to display cases, the design includes classrooms which are arranged in grade-level pods with common spaces for collaborative teaching and learning.  Every classroom has its own restroom with sinks and water fountains as well as its own storage facilities, individual thermostats, and marker boards.

The entire building was designed to accommodate community and after-hours use by easily securing separate sections of the building.  All spaces include wireless network access, ensuring that students and staff will have the most up-to-date technology and support.

Because Miss May had a yellow canary bird she carried to school each morning, bright yellow accents and colorful finishing patterns were used to provide inexpensive and interesting accents to the school’s major circulation and commons areas.
